2/15/24 In-Person Meeting

2/20/2024

A large contingent of our group braved cold, crappy winter weather to warm the cockles of their modeling hearts with the warm bonhomie of fellow modelers. Here's a few photos of the group, followed by photos of a demonstration and then the evening's show and tell models.
Vacuum Forming for Modeling Made Easy
(Or At Least Explained)
February's in-person meeting featured a terrific live demonstration of vacuum forming tools and techniques by Nick Filippone. Nick routinely vac-u-forms large and small parts for his models when kit parts won't cut the mustard or simply do not exist. Check out the photo of his XB-15 below. Nick vac-u-formed the fuselage, engine nacelles, and clear parts in order to complete this fantastic model of an aircraft not available as a kit.

Nick set up a selection of his vacuum forming tools: a modernized Mattel antique from the 1960s, a home-built unit for forming large parts, a commercial unit marketed to modelers, and a deluxe sucker marketed to the dental trade but very useful for modeling projects.

Photos and captions follow.
Nick's vac-u-form arsenal.
Nick described the features and properties of his machines.
Nick reviewed the basics of creating forms and using heated sheet plastic.
Nick operates the pump of the modernized Mattel machine to suck the hot plastic sheet down over the form.
The plastic sheet ready to remove the form and cut out the newly shaped part.
Nick built this bad boy from wood, duct tape, and sheet metal to make large shapes such as the fuselage halves of the XB-15. Suction is provided by a vacuum cleaner.
Here are the masters Nick carved from wood and used to vac-u-form the XB-15 fuselage halves. The plastic sheet was heated in his kitchen oven using the sheet metal frame.
The fuselage, cowlings, and clear parts were all vac-u-formed and then cut out and assembled by Nick.
This machine is a commercial product offered by Micro Mark. Bigger forming area than the Mattel, but smaller than the home-built one. A combination of a vacuum cleaner and auxiliary hand pump provides suction.
This machine is sold to the dental market. It's pricey, but top quality, with a built in heating element and high power suction.
Here's the plastic sucked down over a canopy form.
Nick shows the end result. Very impressive.
