Welcome to 2023!
We held our annual holiday Yankee Swap on December 15, and by this week we've shelved most of the hard feelings over kits that may have been snatched from our deserving hands by supposed friends (at least for the next 11 months) and we resume our normal atmosphere of bonhomie!
Photo Visit of a Japanese Ground Self Defense Force (JGSDF) Base in Japan
Harvey Low of IPMS Toronto presented a slide show covering his visit to a JGSDF base. The content is rich in background information and walk around style close-up detail photos for several vehicles, including a Fuji AH-1S “Cobra”, Toyota High Mobility Vehicle, Komatsu LAV, Komatsu Type 96 APC, Mitsubishi Type 90, Type 74, and Type 10 MBTs, Mitsubishi Type 74, 105mm, Type 75, 155mm SPHs, Mitsubishi Type 87 AA Gun, Mitsubishi Type 89 IFV, and a Type 94 Beach Minelayer.

Harvey graciously allowed us to share the PDF of his presentation – view or download it here.

Guest Speaker: Justin Taylan, founder of Pacific Wrecks

Justin Taylan of Hyde Park, New York (and proud RPI alum!) will speak about Pacific Wrecks, the website and 27 year project that began with him building models and interviewing his grandfather, which has evolved into him traveling across the world to document World War II Pacific and Korean War battlefields, aircraft crash sites, and shipwrecks. His presentation will provide more background and summarize his most recent expeditions and initiatives. Be sure to visit  PacificWrecks.com to learn more, get involved, and learn about ways you can support the project!

An Evening with Jon Parshall, Co-author of Shattered Sword

Tonight Jon Parshall shares a presentation about his latest research on Point Luck and the Midway battle plan, and then generously agrees to a Q&A session with us!

Shattered Sword provides background and operational details newly focused from an
Imperial Japanese Navy perspective which is critical to a multidimensional understanding of the Battle of Midway. If you haven't read it yet, this critically acclaimed (5-star reviews), must-read book is available to purchase online.

Club members were encouraged to share models of Pacific War, WWII carrier aviation, WWII IJN/US/RN/Commonwealth Naval, aviation, or military subjects that they have built to give Jon a peek behind the curtain of our hobby and the reason so many of us are such passionate military history buffs!
